The primary style taught at Myers Family Karate Center is Isshin-ryu. Isshin-ryu
was invented by Tatsuo Shimabuku and is an Okinawan form of karate. Isshin-ryu
karate was formally introduced to the world in January of 1956.
- Isshin-ryu uses a vertical fist, which increases speed and focus. The fist is
formed with the thumb on top of a clenched fist, which prevents the thumb from being
jammed, and also strengthens the wrist to keep it from buckling on impact.
- Stances are natural, toe to heel, without wasted motion or major body shifting. Movement
forward or backward is achieved by semi-circular steps.
- Blocks are executed with the muscular portion of the forearm. This allows more padding
and reduces the risk of broken bones.
- The kicks are kept low and below the waistline. Low kicks ensure that balance and
mobility are maintained.
Studying traditional Isshin-ryu can greatly enhance your street self-defense skills and
is more easily adaptable to a person's individual body structure.
